Starting Stage Combat: Zeljka Stanivuk

This lesson serves as an introduction to stage combat and safety rules. It also includes a step by step guide to a few techniques: the back hand slap; palm slap; basic punch. There are also a few hand outs and extra resources to assist in the learning process.

Ever wonder how the Three Stooges never managed to actually hurt themselves when they performed all those falls, trips and other violent tricks?

Well, the first attached PDF document contains a lesson that will teach your students how to fall in whichever direction without damaging any parts of their bodies (as long as they follow the instructions and safety rules accordingly!)

The second PDF holds two forms of assessment for and of learning: a Learning Skills Checklist and Combat Choreography Rubric. Feel free to take a look at my side comments for any extra insight into  the details.

The third PDF is a lesson on rolls, which continues the topic of Contact Points. Just like any other lesson, it is free for changes. It does not contain any information outside of the activity itself for the class.

I hope this comes as help to those of us interested in teaching stage combat and that it is put to good use!

Students will be placed in pairs and choose a 2 person scene that involves a strong conflict from the plays provided by the teacher. If students choose to find a scene outside of that collection, then they must have it approved by the teacher for their presentation. These scenes must incorporate a stage fight, tableaux, and character work. They should come to 10 minutes in length.
